Information:
The Agency For Village Support is located in the Central River
Region in the town of Kaur in Lower Saloum. The organisation
became an independent and fully registered non-governmental
organisation in 2006 after the charity Village Aid (VATG-UK)
made a change to its official name.
AVISU's aim is advocating and working for the vulnerable and
poor people with a particular focus on the welfare of marginalised
Gambian women
in rural communities. The agency has over the years kept cohesive
working associations with various NGOs
engaged in the area of rural
development such as GAFNA
(agriculture / food) and NACCUG
(credit unions) to deliver more
coordinated and targeted aid delivery mechanism to the poor
and needy.
Some of AVISU's assistance has taken the form of manpower
saving equipment such as rice milling machines as well as
micro-financing
of small business enterprises, organisational capacity building,
literacy
schemes, training for farmers on rice production, preservation
and processing techniques, creating community farms with water
wells, lobbying of central and local government as well as
large commercial firms and civic sensitisation.
