Review:
White Horse Residence is an exclusive, deluxe, privately
run holiday guesthouse in Gambia providing high standards
of service in quality accommodation that is blended
into its natural palm forest surroundings.
It was officially opened on November 2013 but was
originally a private winter home for the owner,
Peter Weissferdt
and his wife from 2004. The property was later converted
into tourist accommodation by its
German
owner and Gambian business partner to cater to a select
handful of travellers who want peace, quiet and tranquillity.
The White Horse Residence certainly offers this. Nestled
close to the beach and surrounded by tropical trees
and manicured lawns it blends the traditional and
the modern in just the right balance.
The bedrooms are modern with basic mod cons yet finished
to a high degree, while the accommodation's roof is
topped off with well trimmed thatched roofs for a
more African feel. The uncluttered bathrooms are nicely
fitted with modern wash basins and showers. Two of
the rooms are in stand-alone grass roofed huts while
the third is in the main guest house. From your bedroom
it's possible to see the Atlantic Ocean expanse over
to the horizon. Due to the accommodation's proximity
to the beach you are unlikely to need artificial cooling
- just open the windows, take a dip in the pool or
enjoy a cool, refreshing drink at the well stocked
Red Pool Bar and enjoy the cooling sea breezes.
The general grounds of the White Horse guest house
are truly impressive covering a whopping 18,000 square
meters of land area, there's more than enough space
for privacy should you need it.
The central focus of the White Horse lodge is the
12 metre swimming pool which is surrounded in a spacious,
light brown tiled sunbathing area with comfortable
sunbeds.
Your meals are made to order so do make sure you get
your order in nice and early or you might miss out
on some tasty, professionally prepared meals. There
is also a BBQ pavilion where occasionally guest can
get together and socialise al fresco style.
Don't for one second think there's not much to do
while there. There are plenty of activities and excursions
to choose from. You can take a day trip to the local
food markets, outlying villages, a safari on one of
the nature reserves, canoe tours spotting crocodiles
and hippos, transfers to nightclubs and restaurants
in Senegambia, Banjul, Kotu etc., birdwatching tours,
river or ocean fishing by Quicksilver motorboat (incl.
fishing tackle), kite surfing, bike rides, massage,
manicures,
or request something that takes your fancy.
