Access Bank was licensed as a commercial bank by the Central Bank of The Gambia.

Opened Three branches with pledge to open eight more within 12 months.

It became the second bank to deploy ATM in The Gambia.

Access Bank Plc was incorporated in 1989 as a private limited liability company with ownership residing with Nigerians and Nigerian institutional investors. The Bank was subsequently listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 1998. The Bank's shareholding structure is varied and diverse with less than five individuals directly or indirectly holding more than 5% of the issued shares of the Bank. In January 2002, it was successfully recapitalised and consequently came under its current leadership.

With an assemblage of formidable and tested professionals demonstrating track records of excellence, the Bank has since undergone a transformation process which has positively impacted every area of its culture, operations and financial performance and has propelled it into the ranks of Nigeria's leading banks.

Access Bank Plc was one of the first to successfully comply with the Central Bank of Nigeria's banking consolidation policy through the acquisition of two quality Nigerian banks: Capital Bank International Plc (Formerly Commercial Bank Credit Lyonnaise Ltd) and Marina International Bank Ltd. The three banks were fully integrated operationally - people, process and technology - in a record time of 60 days. The Access Bank Plc integration model is the model for integration in the banking industry.

The merger has propelled Access Bank Plc to rank amongst the top 8 Banks in Nigeria with assets in excess of N200 billion and a net worth of approximately N30 billion.
