Why raise funds for water and sanitation in The Gambia?

Seventy four percent of the population of The Gambia live in rural areas and not even half of that population has access to proper sanitation facilities. Women and young girls carry water to their homes, missing out on precious time to care for their children, learn and go to school. This situation can be tackled: providing schools with basic sanitation improves attendance and encourages more girls to enrol. When children learn good hygiene practices at school, they take the lessons home, which in turn spreads healthy practices amongst the community. UNICEF is supporting Environmental Clubs to support these messages.

Over a year ago, Ebo Town was struck by cholera and 40,000 people were infected. If left untreated, cholera can lead to death, especially of younger children. But now Ebo Town is cholera-free thanks to a UNICEF WASH project: there are now 19 new community taps with soap

and water. The community Water Management Committee maintains the taps and ensures they are clean.
