In 2008 schools will
be raising money for water and sanitation projects in The Gambia,
Western Africa. Take part in Day for Change! Day for Change officially
takes place on Friday 1 February
2008, but you can
choose another suitable day. Your school can choose what kind of day
it will be – fancy dress, hold a “Be a teacher for a day” competition
or wear national costumes.
Free education pack,
with CD-ROM Schools that agree to raise funds for UNICEF and register
for Day for Change will receive a FREE education pack in the first
week of January 2008. The pack includes two A2 posters and a CD-ROM
full of activities, assemblies, information on The Gambia, as well as
case studies to illustrate the issues children face in The Gambia.
There are also lots of fundraising ideas to help your school raise as
much money as possible to ensure that more children have access to
clean and safe water.
Why raise funds for
water and sanitation in The Gambia?

Seventy four percent
of the population of The Gambia live in rural areas and not even half
of that population has access to proper sanitation facilities. Women
and young girls carry water to their homes, missing out on precious
time to care for their children, learn and go to school. This
situation can be tackled: providing schools with basic sanitation
improves attendance and encourages more girls to enrol. When children
learn good hygiene practices at school, they take the lessons home,
which in turn spreads healthy practices amongst the community. UNICEF
is supporting Environmental Clubs to support these messages.
Over a year ago, Ebo Town was struck by
cholera and 40,000 people were infected. If left untreated, cholera
can lead to death, especially of younger children. But now Ebo Town is
cholera-free thanks to a UNICEF WASH project: there are now 19 new
community taps with soap
and water. The community Water Management
Committee maintains the taps and ensures they are clean.
