Private Limited Company
Origins & History: Kishinchand
Chellaram (hence the KC initials in our company logo), the late
Founder, started his business from a textile shop in Chennai (Madras)
in 1916. With an expansion plan in place and the first overseas office
set up in Yokohama in 1918, the next decade saw the Kishinchand
Chellaram Group become one of the leading trading companies in West
Africa with branches across four continents.
In 1923 a Management team appointed by
Shri Kishinchand Chellaram arrive and set up the group's first branch
in Nigeria, West Africa, commencing
with wholesale operations in textiles.
Over time, the company moved from retailing into wholesaling and
manufacturing. The opening of Chellaram in The Gambia in 1958 was an
important part of the Group's international expansion. It adopted the
3 umbrellas because in Africa chiefs often walked round with an
umbrella.
Mr. Ram T. Chellaram, grandson of Kishinchand Chellaram who entered
the business in 1960, was the flag-bearer of the company's legacy in
The Gambia. It is now under the leadership of Mr. Nitin, Managing
Director. In 1982 the company shifts focus from supermarket retail to
wholesale distribution in West Africa.
