Easter Holiday:
Date: 13 April, 2009 This is a
Christian holiday and is a public
bank holiday when all government offices are closed. It is celebrated
the day following Easter Sunday. Like in other parts of the world the Gambia's
Catholic
community would attend mass.
Customs include egg rolling
competitions and, splashing people with water which traditionally had
been blessed with holy water the day before at Easter Sunday Mass and
carried home to bless the house and food. The custom of dowsing people
with water is an ancient spring rite of cleansing, purification, and
fertility.
Easter is on a different date each year according to the Northern
Vernal Equinox, and the phases of the moon.
