The School of Nursing and Midwifery started training State Registered
Nurses (SRN) in 1965 and State Certified Midwives (SCM) in 1968. A
mission from the Ministry of Health.
In 1980, together with the schools of Agriculture, Education and
Public Health, the school was formed by the Gambia College Act of
Parliament passed in 1978.
Since its inception, it has been training State Registered Nurses and
Midwives in the Gambia. It started to train Male midwives in 1984 to
meet the demanding needs for midwives. It also trains public health
inspectors, agriculture and livestock assistants.
Graduates of this school are currently occupying senior positions in
the delivery of health services in the country. They are also making
valuable contributions in nursing abroad especially in The United

It is a co-educational school with recreational and kitchen facilities
