The Village:
Kanilai is a Jola village located to the
south of Bwiam in
southern Gambia in the Foni Bondali Region, Western
Division, (geographical coordinates: 13°
11' 34" N - 16° 1' 1" W) near the border with
Senegal. The current president Alhajie
Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh
was born there on the 25th May, 1965 and has a presidential
quarters there.
The village and its outlying area plays host
to the biennial Kanilai International Cultural Festival,
extensive farms and a lodge. The village
has seen a rapid rate of development since the president
came to office. There are street lights, tarmac roads and
electrical power.
Kanilai Game Park: The
area can be reached by road from the main resorts
as there is 8 km of road from the highway leading south to
the park. This is an animal protection and rearing safari
reserve set up by the president near the village and
includes among other animals Nile crocodiles, zebras, rhinos
and other large game animals. Entry to the park is by car
