Mawlid Day in Gambia


Mawlid (The Prophet Mohammed's Birthday)
Date: 9 March, 2009
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was born Arabia in the city of Mecca on the 12th day of Rabi-ul-Awwal (about A. D. 570), which was Monday the 20th day of April, 571 A.C. The birthday celebration of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and is celebrated by Muslims as Eid-e Milad.

(Also known as Milad al-Nabi, Milad-e Nabi - Milad-un Nabi - Maulid) it is marked by Koranic recitals during the day and religious gatherings throughout The Gambia at night to last until the morning called Gamo.

The Mawlid al-Nabi was first observed around the thirteenth century and was preceded by a month of celebration. There is evidence that the Prophet, his Companions, and the early followers after them did not celebrate or otherwise observe his birthday.
