Note:
It was announced in May, 2008 that Royal Dutch Shell's downstream
operations in Gambia, Swaziland and Mozambique were to be acquired by
Galp Energia for a total of $55 million.
The Shell
oil company had been doing business in The Gambia since 1951.
SMGL, was a completely Shell-owned subsidiary, which provided petrol,
diesel, kerosene and lubricants to commercial and retail customers.
SMGL played an active part in the Gambia Chamber of Commerce and
Industry (GCCI) and developed partnerships with local community
organisations and the government. Its most prominent filling station
used to be the one at Kairaba Avenue at the
traffic light junction opposite the
Standard Bank.
