Information:
The
Social Security and Housing Finance Corportation is in charge of
administering and operating 3 funds i.e. Social Security, Industrial
Injuries Compensation and the Housing Finance Fund in The Gambia.
Sections:
• Housing
Finance:
The SSHFC provides serviced plots of land with or without small
construction loans for the low and middle-income groups. They also
suitable number of completed housing units for those in the
middle-income groups.
The corporation is involved in various housing projects such as
Brusubi, Bakoteh and Kanifing
layouts. Employees
are given 75% mortgages and pay off the balance on the property over
15 years.
The development and administration of housing projects is either
carried out independently by the agency or in partnership with other
agencies.
• National
Provident Fund
Employees aged 18 to 54 in the private sector.
• Pension
Fund
Employees aged 20 to 54 in quasi-government institutions and
in participating private companies. This does not include temporary
workers. There is a special scheme for civil servants which is catered
for by the 1950 Pensions Act and another for the armed forces
personnel. To qualify for an old age pension one must be aged 55 with
at least 10 years of contributions. Early retirement is possible if
the person is aged 45 with at least 10 years of contributions.
•
Disability pension: Incapacity for work due to a disability and with
at least 10 years of contributions. The medical board assesses the
disability.
Mission Statement:
It is to provide
adequate social protection for workers, facilitate social shelter
delivery on a sustainable basis and invest funds of the corporation to
achieve optimum returns possible.
