Background Information:
UNICEF's
goals for its programmes of assistance in The Gambia are: support of
the sustainability of the expanded programme of immunisation (EPI);
achievement and enhancement of the Primary Health Care (PHC) services
through the Bamako Initiative principles of community costs-sharing;
support to the meeting of basic leaning needs through quality formal
and non-formal education and emphasis on importance on early childhood
education, policy development services and facilities.
It also
includes expansion of potable water supply and improvement of
schools
and household sanitary conditions; support of mechanisms to
co-ordinate national sensitisation on child survival, protection and
development; and strengthening the capacity in typing and monitoring
the status and of women and children.
