Information:
The YMCA Hostel is situated within the main complex of the Gambian YMCA it is located on the second and third respectively of the administrative block. The hostel has 34 rooms. The third floor of the Hostel which is now completed with aid from the National Council of the YMCAs of Finland.

The accommodation comes complete with self-contained bathroom and other modern accessories of two star quality. The new look YMCA Hostel has two conference rooms and a complete open air balcony for guest to get fresh air.

The YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) is a world-wide Christian, ecumenical, voluntary movement for women and men with special emphasis on the involvement of young people. It seeks to build a human community of justice with love, peace and reconciliation. Founded in 1844, it now works through 14'000 local associations and 45'000'000 members in 122 countries. The National Movements form the World Alliance of YMCAs, an international organisation which has consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. The World Alliance of YMCAs is based in Geneva, Switzerland.

National Youth Council:
The idea to create a youth for the Gambia YMCAs was conceived in the mid part of the year 2001. The council was inaugurated on the 14th May 2001, where the constitution governing the youth council was adopted which is an abridge of the main constitution of the Gambia YMCAs. The compositions of the council is drawn from the three main line churches (denomination) namely:- The Anglican Church, The Roman Catholic Church and the Methodist Church and a task force of four were incorporated as members, with the National General Secretary of the Gambia YMCAs as adviser. The council has the following offices, National Youth president, National Youth Secretary, Social Secretary, Treasurer, Chaplain and Public Relations Officer.

Since its inception the National Youth Council has been initiating programmes in collaboration with partner institutions/organisations, agencies of the United Nations, Non-Governmental Organisations and other YMCAs. Below is a summary of activities of the Gambia YMCAs youth council from May to December 2001.

Day of the African Child:
The National Youth Council of the Gambia YMCAs in collaboration with UNICEF Gambia office commemorated this day in the form of a symposium in the morning with the Theme "The Challenges Facing the African Child in the 21st Century, and the Way Forward" with special emphasis on HIV/AIDS, war an building a culture of peace. The commemoration was crowned with a luncheon sale and youth rally in the evening. It was on Saturday 16th June 2001 and it attracted about two hundred youths and students.
