 Types
of Exams:-
International Examinations e.g.: WASSCE, SC/GCE O/Level
and the HSC/GCE A/Level;
National Examinations such as the Senior School Certificate,
Technical, Business Studies, and Common Entrance Examinations;
Examinations conducted in collaboration with international
examining bodies, such as City
and Guilds of London Institute, and the Royal Society
of Arts;
 Examinations
conducted on behalf of other examining bodies, such
as University of London GCE examination for non-West
Africans, Scholastic Aptitude Test and Graduate Record
Examinations for Educational Testing Service, Princeton,
USA.
The West African Examinations Council was created in
1952. The Council has the responsibility of ascertaining
examinations required in the public interest in the
English-speaking West African countries, comparable
to those of equivalent examining authorities internationally,
and to develop syllabuses, arrange and administer examinations
and to award certificates.
WAEC consists of 60 members, representing the Governments,
the Universities, Secondary Schools and other interested
parties in the five member states which are Nigeria,
Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Liberia. The chairmanship
of the Council rotates every 3 years between member
countries.
Brief History of WAEC:
The West African Examinations Council was established
in 1952 following the submission of the Jeffery Report
to the then colonial Government in the Gold Coast, Nigeria,
Sierra-Leone and the Gambia; who passed appropriate
Ordinances in their Legislative Assemblies in 1951.
The Gambia pays 6.54% towards the expenses for the headquarters
of the WAEC.
