Tamharit Day:

Date: ~Wednesday 17th July 2024 (Gregorian)      See also   HERE

*(Note - Dates may vary).

This day is also known as Al-Hijira or Amaal Ashura, this is the Islamic New Year in Gambia. It is celebrated on the first day of the first month on the Islamic calendar, which varies against the Gregorian Calendar according to the waxing and waning of the Moon. Because of this each year it comes about eleven days earlier.

On this day people would often visit friends and family and wish for good luck and health for the coming year. The day is often marked by a Gamo which is a gathering of people in the evening who sit in front of a stage and listen to speeches, prayers and Koranic recitals.
