Background Information:
The origins of the Department of Posts goes back to 1858 when the British Colonial Government set up the postal service in the Gambia. The national domestic service began with the ship called the "Prince of Wales" which began its domestic deliveries in 1922 plying to up-river villages. In 1976 the current Department of Posts was established.

Services:
It provides a variety of mail services, mainly in the delivery of letters, packets, and parcels. Note that any item that weighs more than 2 Kg is considered a parcel, and anything weighing less than that is letter-size.

The corporation has a legal monopoly on the handling of letter-size items. No entity other than the GPSC is allowed to handle the delivery of items less than 2 Kg both within The Gambia, and and sending out items internationally.

Management:
The GPSC is an agency of the Gambia Government under DOSCIT. The director is M. A. Ceesay.

International Affiliations:
Pan African Postal Union
Universal Postal Union
