The Methodist Mission Agricultural Programme was founded in Banjul in 1974 by the Methodist Church of The Gambia as a farming based NGO which promotes revenue generation activities, environmental protection and food security development in rural communities. The development charity's main goal is ultimately to improve the livelihoods and standards of living for rural communities.

MMAP's main aims are met through various measures such as the use of effective crop irrigation methods, water tube well digging, treadle pumps, tree planting, food preservation, growing seedlings, running courses for farmers, promoting woodlots etc.

The Methodist missionaries have been operating in The Gambia since 1821 and first became involved in the field of horticulture in 1823 when it procured five dozen hoes and various farming equipment for projects on Janjanbureh also known as Lemain Island (formerly McCarthy Island).
