The majority of banks accept credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard & American Express. When travelling to Gambia do try and bring Traveller's Cheques as not all hotels & restaurants accept cards. Bank charges for foreign exchange vary from each institution so it's worth shopping around. However, if you are changing a large amount they are prepared to improve their rates on-the-spot for you. Euro cheques are also accepted but must be paid into an account.

There are numerous foreign exchange bureaus particularly around the Senegambia & Kairaba Hotel areas. They are often quicker than the banks and can often give you better rates. You are strongly advised to steer away from the parallel market (black market) for foreign currency as it is illegal.

ATM Cash Machines
You can withdraw money from ATM cash machines from Standard Bank using Visa at any of its local branches as well as cash UK cheques when accompanied with a proof of identity namely your passport. You sometimes have to make multiple withdrawals as the amount dispensed per withdrawal is sometimes limited to a fixed maximum amount (typically D2,000). Debit cards can also sometimes be used however, you should note that fees are charged per transaction so it my prove quite costly if you need to make multiple withdrawals.

The latest entrants to the banking industry now also have cash machines i.e. Access and Gt. If an ATM machine happens to be empty after closing hours do try another branch and if it is the weekend mobile staff do often do a re-fill, even in the early evenings. And finally you may come across an "out-of-order message". This may not be the case. Be patient as it could be up and running a few minutes later!
